The Ones to Watch : Thomas Muller
Each week, we shall be looking into one of the greatest footballers in modern football and the impact they can potentially make when the World Cup commences in June.
In the 2009/10 season, a young Muller was introduced into Bayern Munich‘s first eleven by then boss Louis Van Gaal. What followed was one of the most rapid rises to stardom in football history, as the player retained his first eleven status at the club during that season, as well as managing to break into the German national setup.
Although he had just enjoyed a great season with Bayern, the World Cup in South Africa proved to be the medium which really showcased the player’s talent. He ended the tournament as the surprise Golden boot winner with five goals and three assists, whilst his performances for Die Mannschaft brought in a lot of praise and attention for Muller.
What makes Muller stand out from the rest of his eclectic German team-mates is his versatility. The player has covered every single position in both attack and midfield except for the defensive midfielder role, and has excelled in every single one of those positions. Match that versatility with his technique, composure and vision, and you’ve got a real gem in your squad.
Although many critics will point to the player’s stature, stating that he needs to bulk up, the rest of us tend to think that he’s already proven the fact that one could be a world class player without looking like a skin-toned cloud. Still at the young age of 24, Germany’s secret weapon will surely be unleashed this summer, whilst hoping that injury won’t stop this great specimen of a footballer to appear in Brazil.
