Maracana stadium, Rio de Janeiro, BrazilAs has been reported in previous articles, this edition of the World Cup has seen the most controversial and severe lack of preparation for the biggest sporting event in the world. With just under a month left until the tournament starts, below is a list of the stadiums which will be used in Brazil and their current state of progress;

THE MARACANA

This historic Rio De Janeiro stadium once held nearly 200,000 people, however safety regulations have since kicked in, so the revamped edition of the stadium now seats a maximum of just 78,000. The gorgeous stadium is right at the heart of the city and just minutes away from the Mangueria slums, making it an ideal location for locals. This is one of the stadiums which are now complete and ready for the tournament.

ESTADIO NACIONAL

Another finished stadium is the brand new Estadio Nacional in Brasilia, with only some finishing touches remaining until completion.

ESTADIO CASTELAO

This stadium in Fortaleza is complete, although some renovation is still required around the building.

ESTADIO MINEIRO

This elegantly renovated stadium in Belo Horizonte has already been tried and tested, hosting a Beyonce concert in 2013, meaning that it’s complete and ready to go.

ARENA DAS DUNAS

A captivating arena from Natal, which is dazzling when seen from above, is the smallest stadium with a seating capacity of 42,000, but which still cost a gob-stopping $400 million to build.

ARENA PERNAMBUCO

Quite possibly the least appealing arena of the bunch, this stadium in Recife is still a sight to behold from the inside and is also complete for the tournament.

ARENA AMAZONIA

The most controversial stadium in the list is in the middle of a jungle and has a seating capacity of 45,000, and was commissioned even though the city of Manaus doesn’t have a top flight team, meaning the stadium will not be used after the World Cup.

ARENA FONTA NOVA

A beautiful stadium sitting at the tip of the Dique do Tororo Lake in Salvador had to be repaired in 2013 after a part of the roof caved in.

ARENA CORINTHIANS

One of the most popular and controversial stadiums in Brazil had its plans delayed after a few casualties involving construction workers last year. It is scheduled to host a test event on the 17th or 18th of May.

ARENA DE BAIXADA

Now we’re moving on to the stadiums which still require completion. This arena based in Curitibia is nearly finished yet 27,000 seats still need to be installed within the next six weeks, with a test event set on the 14th of May.

ARENA PANTANAL

This absolutely stunning stadium is extremely close to completion, however the upper deck of the arena still requires the installation of seats.

BIERA RIO

This visually stunning stadium is already finished and is used regularly by locals, however FIFA feel that it still needs working on in order to be ready for an event as huge as the World Cup.

With only 3 stadiums still requiring completion, it seems that the worst of the Brazilian Football Association’s troubles are behind them and they may finally focus on reaping such a tournament’s benefits.
